Spotted at one of the Middle Eastern country's many auto shows, the Mercedes SL in question comes complete with a diamond encrusted paint scheme (or so it appears), chrome wheels, and of course, white fur-lined seating.
Invented and patented by Daniel Swarovski in 1892, the precision-cut crystal glasses made through the energy-intensive grinding process have been applied into many ranges of products including crystal sculptures and miniatures, jewelry and couture, home décor and chandeliers. In order to create a crystal that allows light to refract in a rainbow spectrum, SWAROVSKI AG of Wattens, Austria – the company founded in 1895 by Armand Kosman and Franz Weis – coats some of its crystals with special metallic chemical coatings.
One of the most popular coatings is Aurora Borealis or “AB” which gives the surface a rainbow oil slick appearance. Other coatings include Crystal Transmission, Volcano, Aurum, and Dorado. A new copyrighted cut, released in 2004, Xilion is able to optimize the brilliance of Roses (crystal components with flat backs) and Chatons (diamond cut).
To decorate the gullwing (upward-opening doors) roadster, the artisans have shaped each Swarovsky crystal into a diamond and then glued it onto the exterior and interior of the car. It took 3 months to complete each “bling-bling” Mercedez-Benz worth JP¥ 40,000,000 (approximately USD 442,311.52).
